When it comes to bathing or taking a shower most of us can agree that it is a part of our daily lives. Washing off the day, relaxing our minds and bodies, even getting our day started, baths and showers refresh and relax us. But that long, hot shower or bath that refreshes and relaxes us could be damaging the very skin that we are trying to clean.
Here are 4 reasons why we should cool it with the hot showers and baths:
1. Hot water can remove too much of the skin’s natural protective barrier causing irritation to already dry skin, which can lead to even drier skin. Keep the water at a tepid or lukewarm temperature—your skin will appreciate you for it.
2. Lengthy baths and showers can also strip the skin of natural moisture. You might also get wrinkly and pruny. Experts agree that showers should be kept down to about 10 minutes. Short showers don’t strip your skin and it helps conserve water.
3. Hot showers and baths can cause stress on your skin. If the water is too hot, it can damage skin cells causing rashes and broken capillaries.
4. If you're acne prone, hot water might aggravate it. Using lukewarm water could prevent further skin irritation and stop the spread of bacteria.
Remember that after your shower or bath, you should towel off and gently blot or pat your skin leaving some dampness. Then immediately apply your cream or lotion to seal in the moisture.
Who knew there were rules to cleaning your body?! Now that we know better, we can do better.
